I look forward and before me is a sea of bodies wading, dancing in the water. They are uncaring, with nobody to witness but the white pines towering over them. Yet here I stand between two crowds. My body tugs toward the crowd behind me. A circle of people standing around in the sand , hiding their bare skin with towels and tattered blankets. Below the cerulean stream, my feet sink into the mud.

When creating my work, I am innately aware of the precarious nature of clay. The tightrope between the permanence and fragility of the medium. I lean into this nature through a multi-firing process, using glaze as a tool to explore the interplay between ceramic’s capabilities as a sculptural tool and a drawing media. Using dreams and memories as source material, I build narrative-based sculptures that weave my queer identity and upbringing with the New England environment surrounding me. In my making process, I transport between the homes, both tangible and spiritual, that I hold dear. I see each sculpture acting as a portal centering all of these places, the fragile grounding point that lies between each of them. Using the figure as an anchor in each piece I bring forth a vulnerability within my work, with humor and whimsy acting as tools to push against the constant forward motion surrounding each sculpture.
